Open Research

A preprint is the draft version of an article. It won’t have been peer reviewed or accepted for publication.

What is the preprint service for?

There are lots of preprint servers available, where researchers can deposit their preprints. However, they are not always appropriate and do not always offer long-term preservation. The preprint service serves the needs of University of Cambridge researchers who,

  • do not have an appropriate subject repository, or
  • who have concerns about the sustainability of the available subject repositories, or
  • who want to use Apollo instead of using the available subject repositories

Why use Apollo for your preprints?

Apollo is a CoreTrustSeal certified repository. It offers a reliable and sustainable option for our researchers. The benefits of using Apollo include:

  • long-term digital preservation, persistent identifiers for the outputs it holds (PIDs)
  • machine-readable metadata
  • it uses DSpace; an open-source repository platform

The Preprint Checker Tool

This tool an overview of the main subject repositories. It helps researchers understand if their preferred preprint server is sustainable. It refers to the criteria set out by the Directory of Open Access Preprint Repositories. A sustainable preprint server will, at a minimum: Assign persistent identifiers (PIDs) for the content it holds. These identifiers are usually in the form of DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers). PIDs ensure that others can cite and access your output. Has a preservation policy. Alternatively, it will commit to provide long-term preservation and access of its content. Has governance in place and information about its business / funding model is available.
